Who rents this lens on its own

Both of our camera kits — the Canon R6 Mark II and the R8 — already come with this lens attached, so the standalone rental is for photographers who bring their own RF body. That is most often a second shooter at a wedding who needs the same look as the lead, someone whose own 24-105 f/4 runs out of light once the reception moves indoors, or an owner of an RF body who wants to try the 28-70 for a weekend before deciding whether to buy one.

It is also the lens to take when you can only carry one. At 28mm it is wide enough for a full table, a ceremony room or a group in a small apartment; at 70mm it is long enough for a head-and-shoulders portrait without standing on top of the subject. Zooming with your feet is free — swapping primes in the middle of a first dance is not.

What the constant f/2.8 actually buys you

A constant maximum aperture means the exposure does not change as you zoom: set it once at the start of the ceremony and the aperture stays where you put it at every focal length. Variable-aperture zooms lose a stop or more on the long end, which is exactly where you need it during speeches in a dim room.

The same f/2.8 separates the subject from the background at 70mm in a way that a kit zoom cannot, and it keeps shutter speeds high enough to freeze movement indoors without pushing ISO into noise. If you are shooting video, it also holds exposure steady through a zoom, so a pull does not brighten or darken mid-shot.

The lens is weather-sealed L-series glass and heavy for its size. Bring a strap you trust — this is not a lens to hang from a thin one on a full day of shooting.

Renting the RF 28-70 f/2.8 — questions we actually get

Do I need to rent a camera body with it?
No. You can rent the lens on its own if you already have a Canon RF body. If you do not, our R6 Mark II and R8 kits already include this lens, and renting the kit costs less than renting body and lens separately.
Will it fit my EF-mount Canon?
Not directly. This is an RF-mount lens: it fits Canon's mirrorless bodies (R, RP, R5, R6, R6 Mark II, R7, R8, R10 and so on). On an EF-mount DSLR it does not mount at all, and we do not rent the adapter for the other direction.
Is a lens hood and caps included?
Yes — the lens comes with both caps and its hood, in a padded case. We check the glass together at handover and again on return, so any mark is found while you are still standing there rather than blamed on you later.
What if it rains on the shoot?
The lens is sealed against splashes and dust, which is what makes it usable at outdoor weddings in Dutch weather. It is not waterproof — dry it off before it goes back in the bag, and tell us if it went through anything serious so we can check it properly.
